Star Democrat Endorses Frank Kratovil in Democratic Primary
The Star Democrat, the Eastern Shore daily published in Easton, has endorsed Frank Kratovil for the Democratic primary in Maryland’s First Congressional District.
“Frank M. Kratovil, Jr., the state’s attorney for Queen Anne’s County, is the obvious best choice for Democrats deciding on the 1st District Congressional race in next week’s primary election,” the editorial board wrote.
The endorsement pointed to Mr. Kratovil’s service as State’s Attorney, president of the Maryland State’s Attorneys’ Association, and as board member of the Mental Health Association of Maryland, the National District Attorneys’ Association, the Maryland Special Olympics Board, and as chairman of the Foundation of Community Partnerships. The editorial board also noted Mr. Kratovil’s work as a coach and youth mentor as support for their decision.

Kratovil Out Raises Democratic Opponents 5:1
Frank Kratovil keeps his campaigning and fundraising pace as the February 12 primary nears. Kratovil, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Maryland’s First Congressional District, raised $77,273.96 in the pre-primary reporting period between October 1, 2007 and January 23, 2008, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission. Kratovil’s campaign has received over $240,000 in contributions since announcing in June 2007. The campaign has $82,271.01 on hand as of the FEC report.
“We have met a lot of supporters on the campaign trail as we pursue our goals for voter outreach and fundraising,” Kratovil said. “With this support, we have been able to deliver my message that if we want to end partisan bickering in Congress and achieve progress, we need to change who we send to Washington.”

Sunday, January 27
Door-to-Door
First District Congressional Candidate Frank Kratovil (D) and campaign volunteers went door to door and talked with voters on January 27, 2008. Kratovil said, “Door to door canvassing is politics at the most basic level. Meeting voters on their doorsteps is a great way to learn what voters are thinking and what they want to see from elected officials”. Since announcing his candidacy last June, visiting constituents by going door to door throughout the entire First District has been a major component of Kratovil's campaign.
After Sunday's door to door canvassing, Kratovil attended a Meet and Greet at the home of John and Jane Ward.

GOP Brawling in the 1st; Democrats Hope for Gilchrest Loss
By Bradley Olson, Baltimore Sun; February 2, 2008
Among the four Democrats competing in the Feb. 12 primary, Queen Anne's County State's Attorney Frank M. Kratovil Jr. has become an early favorite among party luminaries, racking up endorsements from the governor, attorney general, comptroller and several major labor unions.
In an odd twist, Republicans have begun to promote Kratovil's viability in November as an issue in their primary. "The bitterness in the Republican primary has got to help," said former Gov. Parris N. Glendening, who backs Kratovil, a longtime prosecutor. "He's got a very good chance."
All this, some state Democrats believe, makes the district ripe territory for an upset. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which helps fund the party's candidates and is headed by Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Montgomery County, has shown interest in the race. "This seat could become competitive, and we are watching it closely," committee spokeswoman Kyra Jennings said in an e-mail. "No matter which battered Republican is on the ballot, all three have shown that they are out of line on issues that matter to the district, and a strong Democratic challenger who fits the area can make this a real race."
Kratovil, for his part, has taken all the bickering in stride. Even, at times, with a smile. "We have a good shot for a variety of reasons," he said in an interview in his Centreville office. Privately, some Republican aides have talked up Kratovil's chances, noting his lack of any baggage in a legislative record and his skills as an orator, honed from years of arguing cases in court.

Maryland Republicans Set to Lose Congressional Seat
By Stephen Crockett and Al Lawrence of Democratic Talk Radio, February 3, 2008
Frank Kratovil is a very strong Democratic candidate. He does face other Democratic Primary opponents but they are unlikely to beat Kratovil. The Governor, Attorney General and Comptroller are all supporting Kratovil. In addition, the Maryland AFL-CIO and the teacher unions are strongly supporting his campaign. Many local Democratic officeholders and organizations in all parts of 1st District have endorsed Kratovil with more expected this week.
He has demonstrated strong fund-raising abilities and will likely have some national financial support in his bid for Congress. The Internet has connected a national Democratic donor base with strong challengers all over the nation. These donors are likely to prove some financial support to Kratovil. Republicans are having difficulty raising money and have many incumbents in deep trouble.
Kratovil is the State’s Attorney from Queen Anne’s County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Kratovil is tough on crime. He shares the traditional values of the most rural and small town, Maryland Democrats of the 1st Congressional District. He is young, bright, energetic and attractive with a proven record of winning the votes of independent, Democratic and Republican voters. He has strong appeal in the rural communities and small-towns of the Eastern Shore that have often supported Gilchrest in the past.
The 1st District is rapidly changing as new people move into it. Many of these new voters are not inclined to vote Republican in 2008 and have no loyalty to Gilchrest. With Gilchrest losing much of his traditional support and Republicans engaging in civil war, the Democrats are very likely to win this Congressional seat.

Democratic Candidates Vying for Upset in State's 1st Congressional District Seat
By Len Lazarick, The Examiner, February 5, 2008
Frank Kratovil, 39, the Queen Anne’s County prosecutor, has the most endorsements from state and local officials and unions. “I think it is a good sign that the Republicans are not only talking about my candidacy, but concerned about it,” Kratovil told The Examiner.
“I’m running against someone who’s been anointed by the governor and the others in the Democratic Party,” said Steve Harper, 46, a former Foreign Service officer now working in international education. “They wanted to make sure there was someone in the race that they could count on and they knew.”
Lawyer Christopher Robinson, 52, from Cambridge, who ran for the seat in 2006, said, “I hope what I’m hearing about endorsements is true — that they’re overrated.”
Unlike the high-volume Republican race with attack ads pounding the airwaves, the Democratic race is a subdued contest largely being conducted by direct mail and traditional retail campaigning.
