Union ironworkers in Maryland are represented by Local 16 headquartered in Dundalk. Kratovil is the two-term State’s Attorney for Queen Anne’s County.

“America wants change in Washington and the union ironworkers of Maryland believe Frank Kratovil has the leadership record and campaign organization to deliver change for Maryland’s working men and women,” said Don Glenn, Business Manager for Ironworkers Local 16. “Maryland’s First District deserves a congressman who turns talk into results.”

“I am committed to traditional Democratic values of fair pay, health benefits, and the right to organize,” remarked Frank Kratovil. “I am proud that the Ironworkers’ have confidence in my leadership ability and I will work hard for the people of the First District to bring results back home.”

The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers Union, AFL-CIO, roots go back to the 1890's. The current membership stands at approximately 140,000, with 15,000 apprentices. In Maryland alone, there are over 800 members. Members of this union have worked on nearly every major construction project in Maryland, including the Bay Bridge, Key Bridge, Tawes Bridge and other major construction projects around the state and throughout the nation.

Kratovil was first elected State’s Attorney in 2002 by unseating a four-term incumbent. He was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2006. He has served as President of the Maryland State’s Attorneys’ Association and is a leading spokesman at the General Assembly for tougher penalties for violent offenders and anti-gang legislation to assist local law enforcement agencies. In July 2006, the Court of Appeals of Maryland appointed him to the Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure. Kratovil Out Raises Democratic Opponents 6-1,
Beats Incumbent Gilchrest in Individual Contributions

Frank Kratovil, Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives in Maryland’s First Congressional District, raised $83,152.37 in third quarter ending September 30, 2007, nearly six times more than his closest primary opponent, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission. The Kratovil campaign begins October with $110,080.95 on hand and no debts or obligations.

Democratic opponent Chris Robison reported he raised $13,975.00 in the third quarter, with $35,251.59 on hand and $14,508.93 in debts and obligations. Steven Harper, the third Democratic candidate, has not filed a report.

The Kratovil campaign also raised more from individuals than incumbent Congressman Wayne Gilchrest, who reported raising $80,143.00 from individuals and $11,500.00 from candidate PACs.

“In addition to our fundraising success, we have built a district-wide grassroots field operation in every county,” Kratovil said, “We have only just begun to demonstrate the strength of this campaign.  Although money is certainly necessary to wage a competitive race, the strength of this campaign comes not from money raised but from people throughout this District who are motivated for change in Washington.  Every place I speak, I gain more support and volunteers.  I am confident that as we move forward our message for change will continue to draw broad support from across the political spectrum.”

Kratovil continues to garner endorsements from Maryland’s Democratic leaders.  His endorsements include Governor Martin O’Malley, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, Attorney General Douglas Gansler, Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller, Comptroller Peter Franchot, former governors Parris Glendening and Harry Hughes and former Attorney General Joseph Curran, as well as many other State and local officials.

“I believe these leaders have endorsed me because they have confidence in my record of leadership and my ability to win the general election,” Kratovil said.  “I have demonstrated leadership in the administration of my office and in advocating for improvements in public safety, and have also demonstrated an ability to win by being elected twice as a Democrat on the Eastern Shore, including a victory over a four-term incumbent.”

“I’m running for Congress because I believe Washington isn’t working for us. It’s time for new leadership and a new direction,” Kratovil said. “I believe in an America that works for everyone, not just the privileged. I believe in an America where we pull together to meet the challenges to forge a future that is stronger, safer and more prosperous for all of us.
